Artist Statement
Years of experimentation with
photography resulting in a number of distinct techniques and projects have led me to
the point of convergence. It appears that a tangible object, in my case a print, is not the
focal point of my artistic practice. The emphasis is on the process of
inquiring, probing, creating and transforming. The outcome is a broader
understanding which can then be conveyed and shared through an image.
In my personal perception the completed work is the digital file. Even after
being finalized, each piece of work is a living unit, holding the potential for
materializing in a variety of forms. Having studied biology, I compare it to a
strand of DNA. Not only the creative process itself, but patterns of
thoughts and life experiences that influenced the work are encoded in the
pixelated blueprint. The original prototype can lay dormant, open for revision, following the dictates of a cyclical nature of life. This
fluidity is consistent with the demands of our times, where no structure can
remain static.
My early explorations are concentrated on entropy observed both in the organic
and inorganic world. That series is followed closely by dealing with loss and
transformation in photographs of weathered statues and crumbling sand
sculptures. The trail concludes with acceptance and letting go represented by
the Karmic journey series. Concurrent experimentations with glass and tinfoil
aim at understanding the fluidity of perception. While the glass project abounds
with abstractions that prompt the search for familiar forms, the softness of
light glancing over faces scratched on a metallic surface exposes and reflects
our human vulnerability. In the flatbed scanner series the models are guided
toward an intense, direct probing of self-awareness. The possibilities hidden in
human consciousness continue to dominate my current somewhat surreal style, with
individual works growing to epic proportions. The influences could be defined as
Dali visiting the Renaissance in the company of a Pre-Raphaelite. A series of
books currently in progress revisits my past and ongoing projects. The purpose
of the publications is to help our global society by inspiring individuals, one
by one.
Based on the observed reaction to my work (or the absence of such), I allow
myself to speculate on the value that it has to offer. The printed image
inherits the patterns of experiences, thoughts and feelings "encoded"
in the original file. Whenever it contains elements consistent with the internal
structures and memories of the viewer, the image can instantly be recognized and
cherished as an extension and an integral part of a very personal experience.
